The two main tools we use at TERRA-MARK are radio frequency pipe/cable locators and ground penetrating radar (GPR).
Pipe/cable locators including the Electromagnetic line locator are most common tools used for underground utility locating, but unfortunately they are also the most underused tools by most utility locators due to their superficial understanding of the technology and geology. And, GPR is also often underused or misused due to the difficulty of data interpretation.
